Running for Office
Have you ever looked around your community and thought, “Someone needs to change this?” What if that someone is you?
Oklahoma needs leaders who care—leaders who understand the needs of working families, students, teachers, small business owners, and everyday people. That’s why the Payne County Democrats are committed to encouraging and supporting people like you to run for office.
You don’t need to be a career politician. In fact, the best candidates are often teachers, parents, advocates, students, and community members who are ready to step up and lead with compassion, courage, and conviction. Local and state offices—from school board to city council to the state legislature—have a profound impact on the lives of Oklahomans. When Democrats run, we put forward policies that prioritize education, healthcare, equality, jobs, infrastructure, and justice for all.
We believe that diverse voices make democracy stronger. Whether you’re passionate about public schools, reproductive rights, rural healthcare, or environmental justice, there’s a place for you on the ballot. And you won’t be alone. The Payne County Democrats will walk alongside you to help you understand the process, connect with local voters, and build the confidence you need to launch your campaign.
Running for office in Oklahoma means filing with the Oklahoma State Election Board during an official candidate filing period. Each office has its own qualifications, so it’s important to check the requirements based on the seat you’re interested in.
We’re also proud to connect prospective candidates with training opportunities, mentorship, and support from both the state party and allied organizations. Together, we’ll help you build your platform, tell your story, and inspire your neighbors.
If you’ve ever considered running—or if someone has told you that you should—this is your sign. Reach out to us at chair@paynecountydemocrats.org to start a conversation. We’d love to hear from you and help you take that first step.
Because the truth is: You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to care.
